The Gastonia Police Department has a rich history of skilled marksmanship. This is demonstrated by its award winning SWAT Team that was formed in 1988, with the assistance of many instructors from the United States Special Forces.
Lieutenant Colonel Oscar "Pappy" Adkins, US Army (retired) provided training, discipline, leadership and guidance from the very beginning.
Major Dennis Crosby, Gastonia Police Department (retired) was the founding commander.
Under their direction the team took shape, performing under standards that continue today. Over the years the team has sucessfully performed hundreds of critical incident operations and achieved state, regional and national recognition for its tactical accomplishments. They have consistently earned top scores in SWAT competitions at the state, regional and national level.
